Reveal the Pink: Precision Laser Correction for Gum Pigmentation
Dark gums, clinically known as Gingival Hyperpigmentation, are a frequent concern for patients with higher melanin levels, making it very common in the Indian population. While often mistaken for a sign of poor oral hygiene or smoking, this darkening is typically just a natural genetic trait where melanin deposits accumulate in the gum tissue. However, for many, this creates an aesthetic contrast that makes teeth appear shorter or the smile look "dull." At Clinic7, we normalize the color of your gums to create a balanced, rosy frame for your teeth.
The Biology of Melanocytes
The color of your gums is determined by Melanocytes, cells located in the basal layer of the gum epithelium. Just as these cells determine the darkness of your skin, they regulate the pigment of your gums.
In many Indian patients, these cells are genetically hyperactive, producing excessive melanin granules that get trapped in the gum tissue. This is usually Physiologic Pigmentation (genetic). However, secondary factors can exacerbate darkness: Smoker's Melanosis occurs when components of tobacco smoke stimulate melanocytes to overproduce pigment as a defense mechanism. Certain medications and metallic restorative materials (amalgam tattoos) can also contribute to localized discoloratio

The Clinic 7 Clinical Advantage
Home remedies for dark gums are ineffective because the pigment lies deep within the tissue layers. Our approach is technological and precise.
Laser Precision: We use advanced soft-tissue lasers that specifically absorb into the melanin pigment, vaporizing the dark cells instantly without cutting the gums with a scalpel.
Bloodless Procedure: The laser cauterizes as it works, meaning there is virtually no bleeding and significantly reduced risk of infection compared to traditional surgical scraping.
Rapid Re-Epithelialization: Our technique promotes faster tissue regeneration. Most patients see a return to a healthy coral-pink color within just a few days of healing.

Treatments
FAQs
Question: Is the treatment painful? Answer: The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you will feel no pain during the treatment. Post-procedure discomfort is minimal and usually feels like a mild pizza burn, healing quickly.
Question: Will the dark color come back? Answer: Results are long-lasting, often remaining stable for many years. However, because genetics plays a role, some "re-pigmentation" can occur over a long period (5-7 years), though it is rarely as dark as the original condition.
Question: Can smokers get this treatment? Answer: Yes, but we strongly advise cessation. If you continue to smoke, the heat and chemicals will restimulate the melanocytes, causing the dark pigmentation to return much faster than in non-smokers.
Question: How long does the procedure take? Answer: It is a quick "lunchtime" procedure. Treating both the upper and lower arches typically takes about 45 to 60 minutes.
Question: Is this the same as gum disease? Answer: No. Dark gums are usually healthy gums that just have excess pigment. However, we will always perform a periodontal exam first to ensure there is no underlying inflammation before proceeding with cosmetic removal.
